Old Testament Understanding of Virginity

In Genesis 1:28, the command of God is to ‘be fruitful and to multiply’.  In the Old Testament tradition virginity had no values.  The status of a virgin was equal to that of a barren woman.  Virginity in the Old Testament is a symbol of crisis and condemnation.  Prophet Jeremiah condemned virginity who considered it as a curse (Jer 16:1-9).  The daughter of Jephthah mourned for her virginity (Jud 1:37).
