Matthew 5: 4 – Who are the mourners?

The mourners spoken of in this beatitude need not necessarily be a group of people distinct from the poor. They could be the poor who are oppressed and alienated and who experience intense sorrow and grief as a result. Again, the mourners could be understood as those who mourn over the power of evil and malice in the world. Those who mourn over sin in their lives could also be the mourners mentioned here.
