Eucharist and Apostolic Tradition

In the Apostolic Tradition of Hippolitus we have the earliest dated Eucharistic prayer (225 AD). For the text please see FEF no. 394a. This prayer is almost the same as what we have today. We note the important features as:

  • An introductory dialogue
  • Thanksgiving for Jesus Christ: Thanksgiving is Christological, the creative and redemptive work of the Incarnate Word is stressed, and every element that is mentioned is given as a motive for thanksgiving.
  • Institution
  • Commemoration and offering
  • Invocation to send the Holy Spirit (the doctrine of the Holy Spirit was not yet fully developed at this time; still we have it in the prayer)
  • Doxology and
  • Amen
