Eucharist and Justin the Martyr

The apology of Justin gives us a description of the Eucharistic liturgy. Read FEF 128, 129….. He uses the word “Eucharist” to designate the consecrated wine and bread as well as the entire celebration. We also find the fundamental structure of the liturgy that was celebrated in Justin’s time is almost same as what we have today. The importance is on the assembly of brethren, gathered on Sunday, there is a presider for the celebration, and others also are mentioned. “He himself gives thanks….” could mean as the consecratory words. Justin says the basis of this celebration or gathering is the command of Jesus:

“Do this in remembrance of me”.

  1. What seems lost today Sharon is God’s Truth in regard to sin, He tells us to reckon ourselves dead to sin not to keep saying we will sin and continually need forgiveness, Jesus has set us free.

John 8:34-36 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

1 John 3:9 No one who is Born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been Born of God.

Sharon I would like to share some questions with you there are 5 but I do have more, it’s your choice and it’s ok to say no.

  2. Thank you Sharon, what some forget in regard to Holy Communion and they do the same with outward circumcision, which is also of the Spirit not the flesh, is that it’s not about what we do to our body or put in it but what we are in Christ Jesus as His Body that counts. Where is our focus, does it lead to Holiness in our actions, is it on The Lord or focused on worldly chattels, power, and glory, do we walk in sin or righteousness. Do we choose to do good as we trust in The Holy Spirit empowering us to do so. What do we fill our minds with, is it the evil in this world, Satan comes as an angel of light speaking lies and causing deception. Are we half-hearted or do we seek after God and His Truth with all our mind, heart and soul. Does all this mean we have to earn our Salvation, No it’s a free gift but we will show we have it!

1 Corinthians 11:26-28 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

1 Corinthians 10:15-17 I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

Christian Love from both of us – Anne
