Luke 23: 1-25 – Roman Trial of Jesus

The Lukan account of the Roman trial contains also the episode of Jesus’ appearance before Herod (Lk 23: 6-12). This episode is not strictly part of the narrative of the Roman trial. But Luke seems to have his own reasons for inserting the story of Jesus’ trial by Herod in this section. With this addition, the Lukan description of the Roman trial has three parts:

1)      Jesus before Pilate – Luke 23: 1-5

2)      Jesus before Herod – Luke 23: 6-12

3)      The second appearance of Jesus before the Roman Governor who ends the trial by yielding to the will of the Jews – Luke 23: 13-25.
