Cleansing of the Temple – Mark’s Gospel

The Markan account of the cleansing of the Temple (Mk 11, 15-19) contains an introduction which reports Jesus’ coming to Jerusalem and entering the Temple (Mk 11, 15ab), and a conclusion that speaks of Jesus’ exit from the city in the evening (Mk 11, 19). Apart from these introductory and concluding remarks, there are three elements that make up this passage: i) Jesus’ actions in the Temple (Mk 11, 15-16), ii) his teaching (Mk 11, 17), and iii) the reaction of the officials and the people (Mk 11, 18).
